BHL Wrap Up – Round 9

There’s a new summer social hockey format in town!
For those who had a chance to try Hockey5’s during the Oceania World Cup qualifiers, you know this is going to be FUN!
A fast-paced, five-a-side, quarter-pitch hockey with rebounding boards (no outs!) and goals can be scored from anywhere.
The inaugural GCHA Hockey 5s competition will run for a 10 week season commencing Tuesday 3rd October.
This will align with the general schooling term with games commencing from 5:30pm.
The competitions are either single gendered or mixed – with mixed requiring a minimum of 2 female players on the pitch at all times during play (or a maximum of 3 males, whichever way you want to look at it) for a maximum of 5 players on the pitch at any given time.
Competition is being run by Gold Coast Hockey Association and is not a club-run competition. It is a social comp and players are encouraged to form their own teams, team names and uniforms etc. A great opportunity to get your mates involved in hockey!
You can read the Hockey5’s rules in the document link below.
Team registrations will close 20th September 2023.
The fees to enter a team into the Hockey5’s compeition is $750. (This is per TEAM, not per player).
Teams must make payment of all fee instalments by the required due dates as follows:
1st Instalment 20th September $250
2nd Instalment 12th October $250
3rd Instalment 2nd November $250
If you have any questions about Hockey5’s or creating a team, please contact Sandy at Gold Coast Hockey Association on admin@goldcoasthockey.com
Gold Coast Hockey Association can also assist players to source teams. However, we have also set up a Hockey5’s – Summer Hockey Facebook Group for players to connect and source teammates which all players are welcome to join (not just Labrador Players).
Traditionally, our first home game match for BHL against UQ is “Retro Round” where we step back in time and break out the 90’s era playing shirt, play some retro tunes and support the boys at the Stix Clubhouse.
This year, it’s got to be bigger. Many of our players and their families have been impacted by the recent floods. The Stix have a number of players hailing from this region and together, we’ve decided to create a mamoth fundraising day that all our Stix, both big and small can get behind.
Our BHL Crew will be running a special coaching clinic, open to all junior players from Rookies age through to Open Juniors from any club. The coaching clinic will run from 11am until 12:30pm and will cost $20 with all proceeds generated from the coaching clinic going towards the fundraiser. We hope to see as many juniors as we can take part, not only so that we can raise some much needed funds (particularly as this region is again under flood threat this past week) but also because it’s a great opportunity to build skills with some of the best mentors and coaches our club has to offer – including Brent Livermore, Luca Brown, Joe Sandor and Kyra Livermore.
Goalkeepers will also have a special goalie-focussed skills clinic run by Aaron Weiss.
Parents, we haven’t forgotten about you – the Stix Clubhouse Bar will be open so you can watch on as your kids take part in the clinic, and all proceeds from refreshments purchased at the Stix Clubhouse Bar on April 9th will also go directly into the Flood Fundraising fund.
Lock in your spot ASAP to help us ensure we’ve allocated enough resources to make the day as fun as possible.
There will be a sausage sizzle running from 11am – 1pm with all proceeds going to the fundraiser.
As mentioned, April 9th is the next BHL Home game and the Stix will take on University of QLD.
BHL 2 Match starts at 2:30pm
BHL 1 March starts at 4pm
If there was one game we could get you to come and watch all season, it’s this one. ALL BAR PROFITS will go to the Flood Fundraiser and we would love to make it a record day. Come on down and watch some great hockey and have a beverage for a good cause!
It’s RETRO ROUND – so if you’ve got yourself any Retro Labrador gear gathering dust in the back of your wardrobe, dust it off and wear it to the game!
Thanks to all involved in making this possible, from the many Labrador Hockey Club committee, players, parents and volunteers. Also a special thanks to GCHMG for donating the turf time so we can make this day possible. We look forward to seeing everyone down there on the 9th!

As this week marks National Diabetes Week, some of our members who all have Type 1 Diabetes came together by chance at training and we were able to capture the moment.
This impromptu catch up gave players the opportunity to discuss their individual situations and journeys with this chronic condition.
Our members in our picture above from left to right are:
Type 1 Diabetes, in brief, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. It typically appears in adolescence. Treatment aims at maintaining normal blood glucose levels (BGL), through monitoring, insulin therapy, diet and exercise.
Adam, was diagnosed in 2002, he went to a school camp without diabetes and came home with it. He mentions the excessive thirst and need to go to the toilet on his way back in the bus which were classic symptoms before diagnosis. His BGL at the hospital was 64 (normal levels are between 4-8).
Anya, was diagnosed in 2013, at age 7, with very similar symptoms to Adam, thirsty, constant toilet stops and off to the doctor. Anya’s BGL was in the high 20’s at diagnosis.
Lucy, was diagnosed in 2019 also at age 7 with a BGL of 28, similar symptoms to Adam and Anya and as the family left hockey on a Friday night the call came from the doctor to get to hospital.
Andrew, was diagnosed in 1985 aged 10 with a BGL of 42. Playing junior hockey on a Saturday morning he could not run the length of the field and with all other symptoms as mentioned by the others he was admitted to hospital.
This year, National Diabetes Week runs from 11 – 17 July and in year two of the ‘Heads Up on Diabetes’ campaign their focus has been on challenging diabetes related stigma.
Research conducted by the Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes (ACBRD), found that four out of five people living with diabetes have experienced stigma at some point. People living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes both reported feeling this way.
Andrew says; “Type 1 diabetes is a very liveable condition, technological advances along with sport are a key component in keeping healthy, in all of the above members hockey has been the key sport of choice and all have proven that having diabetes has not stopped them pursuing their dreams.”
Sadly, our beloved barman extraordinaire Waz stepped down about a month ago as Clubhouse Bar Manager and we are now urgently seeking a few coordinators to fill his shoes.
The clubhouse bar could be managed by multiple volunteers on a rotating, or regular shift basis. We are open to possibilities. May suit 3 -5 different people.
Bonus points if you have an RSA, it’s ideal, but not a deal-breaker.
The Tigerstix bar is an important social aspect for our club, the more successful and profitable it is, the more it helps to fund initiatives for our club. We’d appreciate your support to make it the best watering hole in town!
More information on the proposed roles can be found here CLUBHOUSE BAR ROLES 2021 MID SEASON.
PLEASE NOTE: There are still other committee positions that remain vacant. Please consider putting your hand up if you can assist with any of the following;
Please contact club secretary Gail Lomas if you can manage one or more of these roles – secretary@labradorhockey.org.au.
Tigerstix Junior Development Program officially kicked off 20th March with 90+ excited Cubs, Rookies and Tigerstix 10’s beginning their season.
It’s been so wonderful to see many returning players, as well as many new families join us to begin their hockey journey.
The junior development program is designed for kids aged 5-10 years with a focus on safety, building skills and most importantly, fun!
Special thanks to our many coaches who volunteer their time every weekend to support this wonderful program.
If you’re interested in signing your child up to play team sport, hockey is a great choice!
Find our more information about our program here.
When the Tigerstix return after Easter break, it’s BRING-A-FRIEND day. So grab your mates and come down and have a try of hockey.
Our Junior Development co-ordinator Clare will be happy to answer any questions you may have, you can contact her on 0490 513 629 or via email; juniordev@labradorhockey.org.au
