BHL Wrap Up – Round 18

BHL 1 took on Kedron Wavell HC on the Tigerstix home ground last Saturday and came away 9-0 winners. This was the last game in the normal rounds and vital semi-final spots were up for grabs.  Going into the weekend, Labrador needed Easts to be beaten by Saint Andrews which took place, resulting in Labrador moving to first place to win the Minor First Grade Premiership. An incredible feat they have only achieved once before!

The young Kedron Wavell side was no match for the experienced LHC team who had to win to keep their Minor Premiership hopes alive. Labrador was quick to score in the first 4 minutes after a good team lead up saw Tyler Gaddes grab the first of his 4-goal haul of the match. Moments later, Ben Cosgrove converted a goal mouth melee. Gaddes bagged 2 more in quick succession following great lead up work by Ryan Proctor. Further goals by the ever- improving Will Mathison, Ryan Proctor and Joes Sandor from a cleverly converted penalty corner conversion, took the total to 8 before Marshall Brown converted another PC variation to take it to 9 unanswered goals by the 59th Minute. Labrador wasn’t able to get to double figures, held out by the tenacious KW HC defence.

Congratulations to tied Best Time Pub Group Best on Ground presented to Tyler Gaddes and Ryan Proctor by Janelle Merrell, with Luca Brown securing the coveted Guzman y Gomez Stix Guard award, presented by Ben Cosgrove. Luca is leaving for Holland to play for Nijmegen HC. We wish him well in this phase of his outstanding hockey career.

BHL 2 defeated Kedron Wavell HC 5 goals to 1 on Saturday, earning a place in the BHA semi-finals next Saturday, finishing fifth on the table. After establishing a 4 goal lead by half time, the team couldn’t capitalise on the attacking circle opportunities until a penalty stroke was awarded and converted by Riley Wain in the 67th minute. The players will train hard this week in preparation for when they take on Northern Suburbs HC in the knockout semi-final next weekend. Time and venue in Brisbane yet to be advised.

It was great to have Joe Reardon return from serious injury scoring 2 of the 5 goals and awarded the Dominos Crestwood Plaza’s Best on Ground presented by manager Michael Campbell.  Congratulations also to Toby Campbell on receiving the Guzman Y Gomez Stix award from our team Stix Motivator.

BHL Wrap Up – Round 17

Our BHL program travelled to Easts Hockey Tiger Turf last Saturday to contest a fixture against Valley Hockey Club. BHL 2 started well with Kevin Mullins putting away a field goal after 3 minutes. In the next 37 minutes Labrador turned away all Valley HC attacks and created several quality chances with a few missed opportunities in the attacking circle. Quarter 3 was the money quarter with the boys converting three penalty corners within eleven minutes to seal the game.

Craig Bigham bagged a penalty corner hat trick with a great performance all round as the boys experiment with a different way of play. Full time score was 6 – 0, setting the scene where we must win at home next Saturday in the final season fixture against Kedron Wavel HC to secure a place in the finals series.

Riley Wain received the Dominos Crestwood Plaza BOG award, presented by the esteemed David Reardon with Jacob Franey awarded the Guzman y Gomez Stix Award by Nathan Ferguson.

We were hard pressed to score in the first half of last Saturday’s BHL 1 game at Easts versus Valley HC with the play evenly contested with a 0-0 result at half time. The 2nd half saw a very well worked corner variation and Kevin Mullins deflecting the ball high into the net. Moments later Will Mathison converted a skillfully taken penalty stroke after an indiscretion in Valley’s circle taking the score to 2-0.

The score went to 3-0 when Kevin Mullins scored a well-timed field goal following a melee in Valley’s goal mouth. The next to score was the evergreen from Joe Sandor after some impressive team lead up and the score remained at 4-0. It was a double cause for celebration for Will Powell awarded the Best Time Pub Group Best on Ground along with it being his birthday weekend. Benn Cosgrove received the well-deserved Guzman y Gomez Stix Guard award.

This Saturday, Labrador take on Kedron Wavell HC at home with teams vying for precious competition points to stay in the top 3 and avoid the sudden death 4th/5th playoff.

BHL Wrap Up – Round 12

Last Saturday, BHL 1 was first to score 12 minutes in when Oscar Charlesworth propelled the ball from the right side, high into the net straight past the Norths keeper. Six minutes later the rapidly improving, Billy Bradford pounced on a penalty corner variation and shot a tomahawk into the net. In the 22nd minute the Irishman Kevin Mullins achieved the first of his two goals following a scramble in the Norths defensive circle with Labrador racing to a four-nil lead. Norths took advantage of a moment of weakness in our defence and scored two late consolation goals before Oscar Charlesworth again converted a great strike leaving the Norths defence floundering. Labrador finished with a 5-2 win, holding 5th on the ladder with only two points separating first and fifth place. Congratulations to Oscar Charlesworth for being voted Best on Ground, presented by David Reardon and Aaron Weiss receiving the Stix Guard Award from Ethan White.

It is a home game this Saturday with Labrador going up against Queensland University in Retro Round. Dust off your vintage gear and head on down to support the teams with BHL 2 playing at 2.30pm and BHL 1 at 4pm.

BHL Wrap Up – Round 11

BHL 1 faced Saint Andrews Hockey Club last Saturday going down 4-3, placing them 5th on the ladder. Saint Andrews scored their first goal after three minutes, followed by a penalty corner just before half time. After some good team lead up play, John Mullins slammed the ball high into the net to get Labrador back in the game with a great high one-time flick. Saint Andrews went to a 3-1 lead following another PC conversion with play see-sawing from end to end and Kevin Mullins slamming the ball home to get Labrador within reach to 3-2. A 50m overhead lob got Saint Andrews out of trouble and saw them capitalise with the score moving to 4-2. Labrador threw everything into attack, resulting in a penalty conversion by Blaze player Tyler Gaddes, who slammed the ball high into the net past the Saints defence, taking the final score to 3-4. BHL 1 will take on front runners, Norths at the University of Queensland in a tough challenge to stay in the top 5 on June 22.

Congratulations to Ethan White for being awarded the Best Time Pub Group Best on Ground as well as the Guzman y Gomez Stix Guard in a rare double, presented by Will Powell.

With six players backing up from BHL 1, the BHL 2 boys put in a valiant effort, narrowly going down to Saint Andrews Hockey Club 2-1 at the State Hockey Centre last Saturday. During the last minute of the third quarter, Labrador turned over possession while attacking in the Saints D30. Saint Andrews hit a 50-meter pass to a lone striker near our DC and converted a 1 on 1 with keeper Christensen. Labrador piled on the pressure in the fourth quarter, eventually pulling one goal back via Kaleb Benney. BHL 2 slides to 6th on the ladder and will face Norths at the University of Queensland on June 22 in a must win game to return to the top 5.

Congratulations to Hudson Keeble on receiving Dominos Crestwood Plaza Best on Ground and Aston Merrell awarded the Guzman y Gomez Stix Guard, presented by Ben Stockill.

BHL Wrap Up – Round 10

Saturday June 1 was the day BHL 2 momentously defeated benchmark team, Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club. Brad Hughes put the Stix one up with a PCA conversion in the first half and doubled our lead with another drag flick in the second half. The highlight of the game was the Stix’s defensive unit, condensing space and keeping Easts scoreless, even as they held territorial advantage for much of the game. Dominos Crestwood Plaza BHL 2 Best on Ground went to Oscar Charlesworth and Guzman y Gomez BHL 2 Stick Guard awarded to Riley Wain.

The next BHL 1 and BHL 2 home games are on June 29 versus University of Queensland, and it is Retro Round. Dust off your retro LHC gear and stay tuned for further details!

BHL Wrap Up – Round 9

BHL 2 executed their skills in the best fashion against Valley Hockey Club last Saturday scoring 13 goals and conceding zero. BHL 1 kept their goal clean while putting 7 past the Valley keeper. This places BHL 2 in 6th position and BHL 1 in 4th on the BHA ladders at the half-way mark of the season.

It was great to see the squad celebrating Ethan White and Luca Brown’s 100 BHL 1 games milestone. Daniel Evans was also awarded the Dominos Crestwood Plaza Best on Ground for BHL 2 with his hat trick and quality attacking circle outcomes.

BHL Wrap Up – Round 8

Congratulations to the BHL Stix teams for achieving two big wins on Saturday against Kedron Wavell HC at the State Hockey Centre. BHL 1 were up first and racked up a 7-nil scoreline. Marshall Brown and Ethan White (playing his 100th 1st grade game) shared the Player’s Player Best on Ground Award. Luke Tyne received the Stix Guard recognition.
With players absent at the South Coast School Boys championships, BHL 2 needed six double ups from BHL 1. They took Kedron to the sword scoring in all quarters with the final score 9-nil. Brad Hughes with his hat trick of goals was awarded BOG and Finn Robinson who backed up from 1s and ran himself to a standstill was awarded the Stix Guard. BHL 1 is now in 5th position and BHL 2, 7th on the ladder.
We encourage all supporters to attend our home games this coming Saturday, May 25 when we take on the Valley HC and cheer them on to climb the points ladder. Also be witness to the special presentations that will take place prior to the BHL 1 pass back, celebrating 100 BHL 1 games.

April 9 2022: Flood Relief Fundraiser

Retro Round Flood Fundraiser

SPECIAL EVENT: BHL HOME GAME: APRIL 9th 2022

Traditionally, our first home game match for BHL against UQ is “Retro Round” where we step back in time and break out the 90’s era playing shirt, play some retro tunes and support the boys at the Stix Clubhouse.

This year, it’s got to be bigger. Many of our players and their families have been impacted by the recent floods. The Stix have a number of players hailing from this region and together, we’ve decided to create a mamoth fundraising day that all our Stix, both big and small can get behind.

What’s On?

Junior Clinic April 9th 2022

Our BHL Crew will be running a special coaching clinic, open to all junior players from Rookies age through to Open Juniors from any club. The coaching clinic will run from 11am until 12:30pm and will cost $20 with all proceeds generated from the coaching clinic going towards the fundraiser. We hope to see as many juniors as we can take part, not only so that we can raise some much needed funds (particularly as this region is again under flood threat this past week) but also because it’s a great opportunity to build skills with some of the best mentors and coaches our club has to offer – including Brent Livermore, Luca Brown, Joe Sandor and Kyra Livermore.

Goalkeepers will also have a special goalie-focussed skills clinic run by Aaron Weiss.

Parents, we haven’t forgotten about you – the Stix Clubhouse Bar will be open so you can watch on as your kids take part in the clinic, and all proceeds from refreshments purchased at the Stix Clubhouse Bar on April 9th will also go directly into the Flood Fundraising fund.

Lock in your spot ASAP to help us ensure we’ve allocated enough resources to make the day as fun as possible.

Register Button

SAUSAGE SIZZLE

There will be a sausage sizzle running from 11am – 1pm with all proceeds going to the fundraiser.

BHL HOME GAME

As mentioned, April 9th is the next BHL Home game and the Stix will take on University of QLD.

BHL 2 Match starts at 2:30pm

BHL 1 March starts at 4pm

If there was one game we could get you to come and watch all season, it’s this one. ALL BAR PROFITS will go to the Flood Fundraiser and we would love to make it a record day. Come on down and watch some great hockey and have a beverage for a good cause!

It’s RETRO ROUND – so if you’ve got yourself any Retro Labrador gear gathering dust in the back of your wardrobe, dust it off and wear it to the game!

Thanks to all involved in making this possible, from the many Labrador Hockey Club committee, players, parents and volunteers. Also a special thanks to GCHMG for donating the turf time so we can make this day possible. We look forward to seeing everyone down there on the 9th!
