BHL Wrap Up – Round 17

Our BHL program travelled to Easts Hockey Tiger Turf last Saturday to contest a fixture against Valley Hockey Club. BHL 2 started well with Kevin Mullins putting away a field goal after 3 minutes. In the next 37 minutes Labrador turned away all Valley HC attacks and created several quality chances with a few missed opportunities in the attacking circle. Quarter 3 was the money quarter with the boys converting three penalty corners within eleven minutes to seal the game.

Craig Bigham bagged a penalty corner hat trick with a great performance all round as the boys experiment with a different way of play. Full time score was 6 – 0, setting the scene where we must win at home next Saturday in the final season fixture against Kedron Wavel HC to secure a place in the finals series.

Riley Wain received the Dominos Crestwood Plaza BOG award, presented by the esteemed David Reardon with Jacob Franey awarded the Guzman y Gomez Stix Award by Nathan Ferguson.

We were hard pressed to score in the first half of last Saturday’s BHL 1 game at Easts versus Valley HC with the play evenly contested with a 0-0 result at half time. The 2nd half saw a very well worked corner variation and Kevin Mullins deflecting the ball high into the net. Moments later Will Mathison converted a skillfully taken penalty stroke after an indiscretion in Valley’s circle taking the score to 2-0.

The score went to 3-0 when Kevin Mullins scored a well-timed field goal following a melee in Valley’s goal mouth. The next to score was the evergreen from Joe Sandor after some impressive team lead up and the score remained at 4-0. It was a double cause for celebration for Will Powell awarded the Best Time Pub Group Best on Ground along with it being his birthday weekend. Benn Cosgrove received the well-deserved Guzman y Gomez Stix Guard award.

This Saturday, Labrador take on Kedron Wavell HC at home with teams vying for precious competition points to stay in the top 3 and avoid the sudden death 4th/5th playoff.
